I got a PR and am so MAD! (and protein shake)

Wanna know why I am SO MAD!! I ran my 3.1 miles today in 41:28 and I didn’t get a picture to prove it!!!!

Rrraawwwwrrrr

41:28 is a 34 second “treadmill” PR. I was all excited about being in the forty one’s and I hit stop but couldn’t tell if it actually stopped, so I hit it again and it cleared the treadmill!!! ARRRGHHHH! I was so upset. BUT not enough to ruin my moment. This was a great run. It felt GREAT. I felt rested, strong, energized and excited to run. Nothing hurt while I was running and my breathing was spot on. One of those runs that you wish they could all be like.

This was my strategy:

mile 1
alternated running 2 min and walking 1:30

mile 2
alternated running 2:30 min and walking 1:30

mile 3
alternated running 3 min and walking 1:30

sprinted last .10 of a mile

Speeds
All runs were at 5.0 (12 mile pace) and walking at 3.5 with the exception of the last sprint which I did at 6.2

During mile 3 I ran a few times for 4 minutes b/c I just felt like I could run longer so I did. It felt GREAT.

One thing that I do think contributed….look who’s back…..

Shoes reebok

I was just not liking my new shoes. I think I might be kicked out of girl-dom b/c what girl says that??? I realized that I was dreading runs b/c I didn’t want to run in them. And then I woke up and realized that I don’t HAVE to run in them. I know, shocker right? I do have other shoes and can run in those. So I did. I DO think that I probably shouldn’t be running all the time in these shoes, so I’m going to take the Saucony’s back and see what I can find that is somewhere in the middle of lightweight and stability. With the amount of choices they have I am sure they will have something that feels right.

Don’t be fooled, I look all sweet and happy, but inside I was wanting to kick that stupid treadmill for resetting on me. Doesn’t it know I have a blog to write and I need pictures. Sheesh!!

Yesterday I made the yummiest protein shake. I have found that if I have one of these in the morning I stay full for a looooooong time. And the best part is I can drink it on my loooooooong commute so it saves me time. Why I have never thought of this before beats me, but its one (of the many) reason that I enjoy reading healthy living/running blogs b/c I find awesome ideas like this!

Protein shake smoothie

I get a little crazy with them. I just want to add everything. So I do.

In this one went:

1/2 cup 2% milk
1/2 cup 0% non-fat plain Chobani
1 banana
1 scoop vanilla protein powder
1 spoonful of Adams peanut butter
1 easy spoonful of chia seeds
as much ice as I want for volume and chill

Then I top with whatever berries we have at the time. Right now we have awesome raspberries and blueberries

One day I will have awesome lighting in my house and my pics will win prizes. Until then, you get this. Sigh.

Love’m or Leave’em Valentines Day 5k

Official time 44:14

RAN THE WHOLE TIME.

Let me say that again.

I ran the ENTIRE time, did not stop once. I may have been running at the same pace that some people were walking, but I did NOT walk once during this race. This has been a personal goal of mine for a LONG time and I can’t believe the day has come that I accomplished it!!

Even though my time in this race was faster, I really wanted to concentrate this time on slowing it down and running the entire time instead of running/walking. I know now that  I can run the distance and so now I can work on time. I would love to get to below 40 min in the next few months and I know I can do it!

Ok let’s back up to the beginning….

Breakfast

IMAG0932

English muffin with Nutella, naner and chia. I usually eat a sandwich thin, but today I felt I needed something a little, idk…more.

Had plenty of time this morning since the race didn’t start until 9:30. Lots of time for my coffee to work its magic so we don’t have a repeat of this.

Headed up to Seattle to Green Lake, one of my favorite places in all of Seattle. I remember when I first moved here a few years ago I was super impressed that I had walked around Green Lake. Now I was gonna run it. I’ve come a long way baby.

Got our shirts and hung out in the car for a bit cuz it was brrrrr. Not near as bad as the last race, but still cold.

IMAG0933

We got our bibs on, timing chips and took some pre-race photos.

IMAG0935

IMAG0936

Can anyone say cheeseeeee-yyyyyy? (we can in case you couldn’t tell)

IMAG0944

We saw a girl doing yoga poses on the treadmill at the gym the other day but weren’t able to get a pic, so Paul decided to recreate the moment. Except not on a treadmill. And not a girl. But whatev, same general idea.

IMAG0946

Headed to the start area, hit up the port-a potties one more time, got some stretching in and then lined up according to pace.

IMAG0947

IMAG0948

Paul stayed up here and I headed to the back. Running at 8min pace is sooooo last year anyway.

IMAG0952

This was where I was in relation to the start. Took a while to actually get to the start since it was so congested.

Mile 1

Felt good pretty much the whole time. Lots of people passed me but I didn’t care. I was just enjoying listening to my music and enjoying how good my body feels when I first start running. I made sure to keep my pace slower and not get to excited b/c I really wanted to run the whole time and didn’t want to jeopardize that.

Mile 2

HARD. Hard hard hard. This is when people around me started slowing down and walking and I knew that I wasn’t halfway done/still had a mile to go. I just kept telling myself that I had all the rest of the day to sit and relax and do whatever else. I just had a little bit more to go and then I would be done. This kept me going even when I wanted to stop.

Mile 3

Feeling better. Knowing I only had one mile to go, I started to really believe I could do it. I could run the whole thing. It was happening. I was around the same basic group of people and one girl by me kept walking, but then when I would pass her she would run again to be in front of me. It was amusing.

Passing girl

Paul PR’ed!!! (24:14) so he ran back to find me and run the end with me. And take lots of pics of me running. Love that guy. Seriously.

This was it. Only .30 to go. I was gonna do it!!

Garmin time was 46:22 for 3.22 miles. This was mostly due to the fact that I started it when we started, not at the actual start line, and also b/c I forgot to turn it off when we crossed the finish. I kept telling myself not to do that, but of course I did.

IMAG0963

Official race results read 44:14. Not faster than the Magnuson race, but I walked a bunch in that one so I consider this a total win!!

We hung around the finish for a bit and got some treats

IMAG0953

Yes, that is red velvet cake. I know right?

After race:

IMAG0956

I think we had a little runners high, no?

We headed downtown to hit up Pike Place for lunch and ended up at Pike Place Brewing Co.

We weren’t fans of our waitress but the food was good.

Waitress rude

IMAG0965

IMAG0966

Turkey sandwich for me and a spinach salad with chicken for Paulmeister.

When I hit up the b-room, Paul got camera happy.

Wow those two pictures together look like one pic! That is CRAZY. Totally unplanned. But wicked cool.

After we ate we walked around Pike Place (the location of our first date….everyone together now…awwwwwww) and saw these little cuties outside one of the restaurants. I tried to convince Paul that they were obviously abandoned and that we needed to take them home with us, but he told me no. Rude.

IMAG0960

Got some awesome fresh produce at the market, an iced coffee and then headed home for some laying around and tv watching.

Next up is the St. Patty’s Day 5k.  I’ve done this one before and if the course is the same its half uphill and half downhill. That ought to be interesting. Hopefully the time I loose going uphill, I can gain back going downhill? Either way I’m gonna shoot for at least 42:00. Any tips, tricks, helpful solutions to get a little faster are always appreciated. 😉

What was your first big “milestone” with running?

A case of LPS (loose pants syndrome)

News alert! Stop the presses!

My pants are loose. Winning.

I’m not a huge fan of weighing myself and obsessing over numbers. I’ve actually contemplated getting that zero scale. You know the one that doesn’t tell you what your actual weight is, it just tells you how much you’ve lost or gained since the first reading? Seems interesting to me, but haven’t really seriously thought about it, so still just kind of going off of how my clothes feel and how I feel in general.

So it looks like I’m coming down with a case of LPS. Much better than its counterpart, TPS (tight pants syndrome.) Hopefully we won’t have a case of that until I’m down to size 6’s AND it’s holiday season AND I have a broken foot so I can’t workout. I think I could deal with that. Maybe.

Today I worked from home b/c I woke up with a killer migraine. Nothing worse than waking up with a headache. I’m convinced it was due to the nightmare I had about the bikram yoga class I signed up for. NIGHTMARE. It was bad.I really need to just do it and get it over with so I can stop freaking out about how awful it’s going to be. Sucker for torture, that’s me.

So in addition to all the “work-work” I did at home (which also included two loads of dishes and about 6 loads of laundry…fun!) all my meals were in bowls today. I didn’t even try to do that, it just happened.

Talented, I know.

Bfast:

Oatmeal, a huge chopped up apple, sunbutter and chia seeds. I promise there is oatmeal under there.

Lunch:

Romaine, tomatoes, sprouts, tuna, g-banzos, more chia, awesome homemade dressing that a friend made and left here after small group on Monday. Score!

Taken on the windowsill…we actually had some nice light today.

Dinner:

Creamy potato soup. In the crock-pot all day. Fab.  Big hit with the boys too, so double win!

I mean really….look at that. I want more. Recipe to come lata…

Workout was simple but successful. Paul and I hit up the gym when he got home. I ran two miles, in a row, again, without stopping. I felt like I could have done more had it not been 8 at night and we had to still go home and eat dinner. Blech. Why can’t there be 30 hours in a day?

Paul was still running, but I made him take a picture anyway. Thus the blur. I mean really, whats more important, his run or pics for my blog? C’mon, we all know the answer to that.

I think that’s his “I will appease you and let you take a pic of me even though I am a sweaty monster” look. Cute, huh?

What are you having right now LPS or TPS? Or neither?

How many hours do you wish there were in a day?
